One of our special offerings at Roil Projects Inc. has been our “Specialty and Custom Hauling” services. Over the years of hoisting and lifting various types of equipment with our knuckle boom cranes and picker trucks, we have had to haul some interesting payloads to and from site. Often the cargo is delicate and requires special handling practices when lifting and transporting it. We have developed many different types of specialty packaging to ensure these often extremely costly and fragile items get to their destination in pristine condition. Just a few of the custom items we have designed for transport include crankshaft support blocks, adjustable crankshaft seal plate supports, compressor and engine overhaul shipping crates with customizable dividers to ensure machined surfaces are not damaged, horizontal electric drive transport stands along with a host of other transport products. Along with these custom items our trucks are equipped with air ride suspensions to ensure items do not get damaged traveling down rough roads common to our area.

All of our crane operators are trained not only in cargo securement and correct tie down techniques, they are also trained in the proper handling of specialty equipment and an understanding of the complexity of the items they are hauling so they can understand how to properly handle support and transport specialty cargo. You can be confident when you hire Roil Projects Inc. to haul your equipment that it will arrive safe and sound. Just another reason to give Team Roil an opportunity to help you find the solutions you require to get any job done safely, efficiently and cost effectively!

The first Knuckle boom picker truck we rigged out “Casper” was originally designed to do double duty as a “tool truck” with a 9 ton knuckle boom crane mounted on it. Originally we built it to be able to lift large 1000 gallon storage tanks which we would then set and plumb in to compressor buildings in order to store large quantities of engine oil for oil changes and services on the natural gas compressors and engine inside buildings. We quickly found other uses for the picker as many mechanics would call us and ask us to help them when overhauling engines and compressors, lifting heavy components from the door ways of these buildings.

Initially we started just lifting the items we could access that were close to the building doorways but that rapidly progressed to requests for us to reach inside the buildings to lift complete engines, compressors, electric drives and large vessels and such. It quickly became apparent that we were going to need to develop some form of attachment that could be inserted into the end of the boom of the crane in order to reach far enough inside to lift heavy items. At first we were using what they call a “dead section” which was simply an extension of the boom that was manually pulled out and pinned into place allowing for a small section of the crane to reach further into the building. What we found was that we needed something better that would give us increased boom height but still be small enough to reach in and around other items inside some of these buildings.

With assistance from a master fabricator and an engineering firm we developed what is now commonly referred to as a “reverse jib” These attachments are custom designed and engineered for each one of our units. They consist of a slide in boom extension built from high strength QT100 steel with a 30 degree reverse angle built into them. These “reverse jibs” are carried to the work sites on the decks of our trucks, then inserted into the end of the crane boom, allowing us to lift items in and out of some very tight places without being overly bulky, but still being very strong.

We now have certified “reverse jibs” built to fit all of our cranes from our smallest 3 ton knuckle boom cranes to our largest 30 ton crane in varying capacities and sizes from 1500 lbs. capacity all the way up to 16,000lbs capacities and everything in between.

To view the projects that we have used our Reverse Jibs, visit our projects page.

A reverse jib, also referred to as an “inverted jib”, are fixed attachments that have been designed, engineered and certified to slide into the last hydraulic boom section of a knuckle boom crane. Their are different designs of jibs and cranes, but typically they are about 6-8’ long and have a 30 degree angle in them that allows the jib to be extended inside a doorway or window in order to remove and replace all kinds of equipment from engines and electric motors to just about anything else to heavy to handle manually. They are also often used to move heavy loads under building overhangs and roof sections. We have jibs and cranes ranging in capacities of 1500lbs on our smaller cranes all the way up to 16,000lbs on our largest crane.

Also known as a “picker crane”, “loader crane” or “articulating crane” knuckle boom cranes are known for their ability to maneuver in tight spaces and their compact storage size. It resembles a traditional straight boom or stiff boom crane, but it has two booms that articulate at the knuckle in the middle, it kind of resembles the action of a human finger

They are used worldwide in construction, oil and gas, mining, forestry as well as commercial and residential construction. They have the ability to lift heavy objects and place them on top or inside of a building through tight spaces such as a doorway or window. Another advantage of knuckle boom trucks is that they are lighter and more compact than a conventional crane along with the deck surface they are able to carry payloads.

Adding to their maneuverability they require far less space to “set up” than a mobile crane. They are also able to be controlled at the crane controls but via radio remote control as well. Allowing the operator to be mobile and able to stand near the load or surface your lifting too. All these factors make the Knuckle boom crane truck exceptionally versatile.

  • When selecting a modular building and construction service provider, it is important to consider a list of measurable to ensure you are receiving the best assistance for your project. Our team at ROIL Projects Inc explains the standout qualities a great service provider should have in Alberta.
  • Trade work force – Does the potential provider have the skilled labour required to perform the scope of work? Modular construction requires multiple trades to complete a project correctly. It’s easy to hire labour to complete a job, it’s far more difficult to provide the skilled trades such as carpenters, plumbers, and electricians with the experience and skills required to perform modular installs quickly, safely and correctly the first time.
  • Equipment – Installing relocatable structures and modular buildings require specialized equipment and tooling to deliver the finished product. Cranes, loaders, zoom booms, bed trucks and many other pieces of equipment are required. Does the provider have the necessary equipment or the ability to provide it?
  • Administration – Is the potential provider able to deliver a detailed scope of work and expectations to the potential client? Can they deliver an accurate quote or estimate? Are they able to break out certain items that may be options or extras? Do they include materials in their scope? What is the client expected to provide for the job? It’s very easy to just throw out a price, however, it takes a lot of time and skill to provide a detailed and accurate scope of work so both the client and service provider know exactly what the expectations are.
  • Safety – This can mean a lot of different things, primarily does the provider have a safety program? Does it include field-level safety measures? Does the company have a safety person or representative? Is the company CoR certified? Do they provide their workforce with the proper personal protective equipment? Is the company experienced in not only construction safety but also how do they incorporate other industries specific safety rules and regulations? Do they have oil & gas safety training? Do all employees have the specific safety courses required to work on-site? Finally, what does the workforce safety culture look like and do all employees get involved in the team’s safety at the field level during tailgate meetings and in the office at monthly safety meetings?
  • Execution – This is a big one! Can the service provider execute? Is the company able to deliver the finished product safely, on time, on budget and to the customer’s satisfaction?
  • modular construction team in front of a build

Picker trucks and knuckle boom cranes are used by our technicians to safely and efficiently execute lifts. Our picker trucks at ROIL Projects Inc. have been designed in a variety of configurations for maximum versatility. Below we describe the type of project where a picker truck or knuckle boom crane would be used.

    1. The most obvious use would be for lifting heavy and awkward loads. The possibilities are fairly endless in this respect, the versatility of an articulating knuckle boom picker truck is truly astounding and are used in every industry imaginable. From lifting engines, natural gas compressors, electric motors and modular buildings to windows, roof trusses, construction materials, rooftop heating and a/c equipment. If you need something hoisted that is too heavy to manually lift a “picker truck” is the answer!
    2. Hoisting technician(s) up in aerial work platforms (man baskets) to access work areas that are at great heights.
    3. Using attachments affixed to the end of the boom to install specific equipment to buildings and structures at height. For example, to install windows, panels, a/c units, etc.
    4. Hoisting in very tight spaces. Picker trucks are exceptionally maneuverable and can get into tight areas or areas that don’t allow for very much room to rig up for a lift, where a mobile crane requires a lot of room to set up – a “picker” is far more versatile.
    5. Pickers are exceptionally quick to set up and operate. When speed is of importance, picker trucks can operate with exceptional speed and precision.
